The Transvulcania Ultra is a 74km mountain race on the island of La Palma in the Canaries. Richard and I took on the challenge of running up over 4000m of elevation in May 2016.
Starting in Faro de Fuencaliente at the southern tip of the island at 6am, the run heads up the GR131 route past Teneguia Volcano and follows the spine of the island through Los Canarios and down to the half marathon finish at El Pilar at 24km.
From there we climbed back up above the clouds another 26km to Roque de los Muchachos, the highest point on the island at 2421 metres above sea level. Amazing views.
With around 24km to go it’s a straight 20km downhill to the beach at Puerto Tazacorte. This was the most punishing part of the run for both Richard and me. I suffered particularly badly with pain in my quads and my toes.
The final 5km is no easy run along a road to the next to Los Llanos. We join the GR130 and run along a stony dry river bed for 2.5km and then climb up around 200 metres of final punishing elevation to the run in. The last 1.5km is a straight road in to Los Llanos and the finish line.
It was the hardest race Richard and I have ever done,. but we do intend to return and tackle that downhill one more time!
